"Light has always fascinated me.  Morning is my favorite time, particularly when the sun's rays filter through the lifting fog, scattering into countless facets of light, a sparkle of brilliance on the ocean.  I attempt to quickly record such moments in paint, to capture that light and share its fleeting beauty with others. Landscapes, seascapes, and streetscapes all offer that magical opportunity to flood the scene with sunlight making the painting sing. My favorite medium is watercolour and is ideal for painting light and for painting water in its many moods, from calm reflecting pools to ocean waves and surf." Ron Hazell was born and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Although he followed a career as a professional engineer, he also pursued a parallel career as a fine artist. Since retiring from engineering in 1998, he now paints full time. Ron is primarily self-taught. In 1997, he was elected to the prestigious Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour (CSPWC). Ron is best known for his light-filled cityscapes and for his marine paintings, including the people who make their living from the sea, their boats, and their communities. What to Bring

Materials List

Paper: half a dozen quarter sheets of 140# CP artist's quality paper such as Arches, Fabriano, Winsor & Newton, etc.

Pigments: artist quality, such as Winsor & Newton, Holbein, Lukas, etc. I will be using the following Holbein colours:

Aureolin Yellow and Raw Sienna (Yellows)

Permanent Red and Brown Madder  (Reds)

French Ultramarine, Prussian Blue, Cerulean Blue  (Blues)

Burnt Sienna

Brushes: bring your largest brushes, at least a 1" flat and a #20 round.

Miscellaneous: a 9" x 12" sketch book (or larger), 2B and 4B pencils, board to support your W/C paper, facial tissue, hat, jacket, bug-off. In case of inclement weather, bring sketches and/or photos of your favourite landscapes as resource material for painting indoors. One of the focuses of this workshop will be composition. I will be offering friendly constructive critiques at the end of each painting session.

For those who would rather paint indoors, they will still need a hat and jacket to attend the outdoor painting demos. Of course, demos will be inside if it is too wet to paint outside.
