Spring Plein Air Watercolour Workshop with Christopher Gorey

Award winning artist, Christopher Gorey will teach methods and materials used in plein air watercolour painting. Chris will demonstrate how to isolate and simplify the landscape; value relationships, design and colour harmonies and mixing.

Located on the ocean, the picturesque and pristine Eastern shore line with traditional fishing villages offers many locations to paint en plein air, right from our door step.

Christopher Gorey (http://www.goreygallery.ca/chris/index.htm) was born and educated in the United States and has been painting for over forty years. He graduated from the Massachusetts College of Art with his degree in Art Education.  After numerous painting excursions to Atlantic Canada, he moved to the small coastal village of Ingonish on Cape Breton Island to take up painting full time. He lives there with his wife. The Goreys have two children.

Twice, Mr. Gorey's One Dollar Commemorative coin designs were chosen by the Royal Canadian Mint to be produced in silver. His paintings have won awards internationally. He has been elected to Signature Status Membership in the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour (CSPWC), and La Societe canadienne de l'aquarelle (SCA).

Ability Level:  for the intermediate and advanced student.

Friday

 

1:30 pm or later           check in at Marquis of Dufferin

5:00 - 8:00 pm            dinner on your own, the restaurant on site or local options available

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm    Welcome party to meet the instructor and other participants, will be followed by a talk by the artist and small watercolour demonstration.  Wine or non-alcoholic beverages and hor d'oeuvres will be served.

 

Saturday

 

8:00 -9:00 am              Full breakfast of your choice.

 

9:00 am - 12:00 pm     A discussion of watercolour materials as well as learning to see shapes and simplifying the landscape as it applies to plein air painting. This will be illustrated in conjunction with an outdoor demonstration. Then students will then work on their own paintings

 

12:00 pm - 1:00 pm    lunch.

 

1:00 pm - 4:00 pm      Painting will continue through the afternoon followed by a group critique. Throughout the day individual attention will be given by Mr. Gorey.

 

 

5:00 pm to 8:00 pm     Dinner, three course dinner of your choice from our menu.

 

Sunday

8:00 am - 9:00 am       Full breakfast of your choice.

 

9:00 am .- 12:00 pm    A brief discussion of value relationships, design and colour in the landscape illustrated by a small watercolour demonstration. Students will then work on their own paintings

 

12:00 pm - 1:00 pm    Lunch.

 

1:00 pm -                    Students continue working until 3:00 PM. Individual attention will be given. The day will be completed with a final critique and wrap up.

 

NOTE:  In event of inclement weather classes will be conducted at the local community centre.

Please keep in mind that we are a small property and last minute cancellations affect us greatly. There is no charge or cancellation fee if your registration is cancelled more than thirty (30) days before your scheduled arrival. We do not offer refunds or credit for cancellation with less than thirty (30) days notice.  Regretfully, we can not offer credits or refunds for illness, emergencies, leaving early or any event beyond our control.  Just inform us and you may transfer your paid registration to someone else without charges.

1. 2 sheets of rag WC rough paper (Arches, Waterford or Fabriano)
2. Board for paper
3. Masking tape or Bulldog clamps
4. Water container and paper towels
5. HB pencil and white eraser
6. Palette
7. Tube watercolours Cobalt or ultramarine blue, Cerulean Blue, Permanent Rose or Permanent Alizarin, Hansa or Cadmium red, Raw sienna, Hansa or lemon yellow, Hansa or cadmium orange, sap green, thalo or Winsor green
8. Brushes: Round sables, synthetic or camel hair #14 or #12, #10 or #8, #4, Flats: ½" to 1 ½" to 2"
9. Hair Dryer
10.  Stool, Chair, Standup easel or anything else if you do not want to sit on the ground.
