"Ikebana is an art of space....the space between branches
and flowers comes alive.”
Sofu Teshigahara (1900-1979)
Tired of simply bunching flowers together in
a vase all the time? Ikebana, the art of Japanese flower arrangement,
could be an alternative. Ikebana attempts not to simply fill up space,
but to create it. Its minimalist approach considers empty spaces as part
of the whole. The study of ikebana is a life-long process, where mastery
of the art is honed by experience and repetition. The Introduction to Ikebana
workshop is designed to give the beginner a taste of what it is all
about. The workshop will teach the basics of Sogetsu Ikebana. Students
will learn the main elements of an ikebana arrangement and apply them to their
own arrangements. Participants will be guided on how to discern
lines & curves in flowers and branches; they will also learn the elementary
techniques in the use of the kenzan (spiky frog). Flower containers and
kenzans will be lent to the students. Flowers and branches will be
supplied (some taken from whatever is blooming in the gardens of the Marquis of
Dufferin!) and students may take these home after the lesson. After this,
your living room will never look the same!
